Chancel Choir ConcertShare
Sunday, April 23, 2017, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
On Earth Stewardship Sunday, April 23, at 2:00pm the Chancel Choir and string orchestra will present a free concert in our Sanctuary. Opening the concert will be Handel’s thrilling “Zadok the Priest” and Bach’s exuberant motet, “Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden”, based upon Psalm 117.
The centerpiece of the concert will be “Sunrise Mass” by Norwegian-American composer, Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo). This beautiful setting of the Latin Mass uses English titles for each of the four movements. (1. The Spheres, 2. Sunrise, 3. The City, 4. Identity & the Ground) Gjeilo explains that he “wanted the musical development of the work to evolve from the most transparent and spacey, to something completely earthy and grounded; from nebulous and pristine to more emotional and dramatic, and eventually warm and solid—as a metaphor for human development from child to adult, or as a spiritual journey.” The piece is partially influenced by the composer’s favorite movie and film scores.
